The DB Tools Suite
Developed at Cornell University by Johannes Gehrke and Scott Selikoff, this
website consists of a suite of Educational Database Tools in Computer Science.
The first goal of this project is develop a suite of web-based software
applications that can be used to reinforce a lecture as well as highlight
areas of the lecture a students are likely to have trouble understanding.
The particular content for the tools on this website is Database Concepts
in Modern Computer Science.
The second goal of this project is to show how lecture-tailored software
applications can be extremely beneficial to students. Currently, most
educational software material for a specific subject is especially
general in content, and does not often highlight individual topics.
Further, many applications are developed in such a way that there is
a disconnection between the people that write the software and the people
that understand the material. By creating specialized applications for
specific areas of a subject by people who are very well-versed in the subject
material, we intend to show that these applications are far superior to other
forms educational software. At the same time, we also intend show there is
indeed room for improvement in the educational software market.
The applications were designed to be web-based so that any person with
an Internet connection and Browser is able to use them without needing
to install any additional software. This allows the professor to
install the software once, and dozens or even hundreds of students
to freely use it right away.
